The Craftsman by Richard Sennett outlines the relationship between medieval guild-masters and their apprentices, seen as surrogate fathers. To progress to a journeyman the apprentice must present a Chef D'oeuvre to his master. The then Journeyman delivers his, The Chef D’oeuvre E’leve,’ A presentation encompassing skill, managerial competence and evidence of trustworthiness as a parent figure and future leader of a guild.
Working with guidance from my father, a roofer by trade. Each new work demonstrates a challenge to my competency in the heritage art of slating. Working within the confines of a form dictated by the medium, this project explores both personal and broader questions of masculinity, father-son working relationship and the history of a local material and craft.
